WOW! Been to my local detailer today to do some samples of what he can achieve on my somewhat dull paintwork:S
I didn't realise cleaning a car was such a surgical procedure.....
Ross did 4 separate samples using different combinations of pads and creams - giving different results.
Bearing in mind the age of the vehicle and the cost of more extensive polishing, we have kind of settled on a 1 stage machine polish which produced a fantastic result anyway.
Has anyone else experienced machine polishing?

To be honest NBM, I would really love to have a go myself as I've always been fascinated by the whole car bodywork maintenance thing, but Ross has been very kind enough to spare his time to look at the job and give me options:thumbsup:
The range of products is endless and the finished result will be great:woop:
Although when he removed the oxidisation from one panel it did rather uncover the mess I made of the paint when removing the old signwriting from the van

OK, after deciding it was not really financially viable, due to age and cost of my van, to pay a professional detailer to polish it and also then get it signwritten, we decided that the signwriting cost was more important to my business :S
So with great regret I had to cancel my appointment at the detailer's
So it was now down to myself to try and get the van looking as good as I could before going to have my company name put on the side and back.
After a bit of research it became apparent that a company called 'Meiguirs' was as good as you could get for the DIY market and luckily our local factors stock their products
WOW! I've had a go on the bonnet and front wings this afternoon to what, I think, is a great result.
This is a shot of the front end before I used the Muiguirs products - you'll see the paintwork is badly oxidised and dull with an almost satin finish and you can also make out where the Scottish Water telephone number was:

This is the paintwork now, it even completely removed the shadows where the former Scottish Water livery was:

I appreciate my photography is not tge greatest and probably doesn't capture the true effect but I can assure you it has got the bonnet and wings gleaming now
I used a variable speed polisher with 'Ultimate Compound' followed by 'Ultimate Polish'.

That's a cracking result.
A couple of months back The Bus became a Wedding Bus and I got a meguiars clay kit. I've tried to keep the car pretty clean since we got it, but the difference between a wash & wax and using the clay was suprising. It seemed to shine from within the paint. Worth the money & the effort. Even now, when its mucky, it seems to have a bit more lustre than before the claying. Doubt it'll last through the winter.

I fancied a go at the clay process myself and I could have got a complete Meguiars 'Paint Renovation Kit' for an extra £16 than what I paid and that included the clay. But how far do you go for a work van...:S
I am more than happy with the result that the cutting compound and polish gives:thumbsup:

I use Bilt Hamber clay, as it does not require any special lubrication in the form of a detailing spray, you can just use water in a trigger bottle.
Although I normally use a 75:25 mix of mineral water and detailing spray.
