Squeeling Brakes... :-(
#1
Just wondered if anyone has had this problem?Confusedcratch:

When slowing down or stopping my brakes sound akin to a double decker bus stopping....:S

I've had it into the garage and they say the pads are fine..

Is this common on MK2's?

If so is there a remedy?Rolleyes

My Mk2 does it a little bit too, I checked the discs and pads at the front and they were fine, plenty of copperslip on the back of the pads.

I don't know what it is, maybe the rear brakes?

had this problem too but didnt get round to trying the fix I knew from my motorcycling days. Which was to file a bigger chamfer (how do you spell that?) on the leading edge of the brake shoes. As the shoe wears the factory applied one disappears making a sharp edge which bites into the drum making it squeal. Might be wrong but it is worth a try maybe? It worked on my Kawasaki.

I had a new 2.0Hdi in 2003 and it had the same problem all the time I had it. It was never loud enough to be annoying just in the background. I had all the brakes off in the end and never found the cause, plenty of Copaslip and a work with a file made no change. I had the 'feeling' that it was only the rear brakes that squealed. They all worked 100% so in the end I gave up. Yours is the first time I have seen reference to this noise. I thought it was just me before.

Mine have done it ever since I got my 'lingo and have had brakes checked and they still do it, so I just live with it now.
Now an ex Berlingo owner, I have a C4

Mine do it also. HOwever I need new discs so I'm hoping when I get round to doing them it'll solve the squeal. It's quite obtrusive on mine

I like the brakes to squeal, it keeps the pedestrians on their toes Big Grin
So where does this bit go then ?

Interesting. If you're light on your brakes the pads can become glazed and squeal. A few false emergency stops breaks the glaze. I tend to brake lightly and our Bingo squealeth not. On t'other hand our Passat squeals like a pig at the first brake usage but never again.

If the pads are fine, champfered & copaslipped, then deglaze the rear shoes, dedust & lube(lightly) backplate pads & champfer the leading lining edges. If there is a wear ridge on the drum, remove it.
