Just a thought, as I have only ever had motorcycle engines apart myself;
Overfilled engine oil or pump malfunction ? - crankcases are often vented through the air cleaner.
It is on my to do list.
But not right at the top

Same problem, found it when i tried to change glow plugs cos of bad starting! found that the EGR valve was totally gunked up. I cleaned it all out of Valve and both inletmanifolds, metal and plastic with repeated dosing with degreaser and a brush, when back together it made a major difference to my performance and it now starts alot easier. I think its a lot to do with it reusing exhaust gas to cut do emisions. several posts on here about blocking the EGR pipie from Exhaust, might cut down build up in future.
