Wheel paint
#1
My MK11 steel wheels are starting to show rust stains on the paint.
Can any of you illustrious people recommend an aerosol paint that will look reasonably original?
I have seen gloss & silver but no "semi matt" black.
I don't want to tart them up(or is it pimp).Just want a standard look.

Have you thought about powder coating?
My boss had some huge steel gates done by a local company for £50.
Said they would do 4 wheels for £15 a corner. Seemed reasonable?

I've used Hammerite in the past, both brush and spray. It's quick and easy, and doesn't need as much preparation as some finishes. It dries quickly too, which can be a benefit, especially if you've got the wheels off when 'er indoors wants to go shopping.
It's fine for wheels protected by wheel trims, or areas that aren't subject to a hail of gravel, but I found it chipped quite easily when applied to exposed chassis.

Have you got an Aldi near you ? Next time they have their metal care paint in the offers buy a tin of silver and one of black. It's about £5 a litre and is way better than Hammerite. You can thin it with cheap cellulose thinners which I use for spraygun wash so you can spray it as well.
So where does this bit go then ?

Thanks for all the ideas.I've used Hammerite smooth black on many outdoor metal things, railings etc & it's brill.BUT it's too glossy.
Perhaps being an old fart I don't like glossy wheels.Being a shy & retiring Berlingo owner,I would hate people to think I am pimping on the cheap.Rolleyes

like coco I use halfords satin black on my std citroen wheel covers when I put my steelies on with winter tyres for winter driving. A can of this just goes over, must have 30 coats deep by now, and if I chip them I just spray over, , dont even wash, really magic, and EASY. If I need to fit snowchains then just pull covers off on 2 front wheels. BUT each march I do long to put alloys back on.
