[Engine] hdi crank pulley or not???
#1
Hi Peeps, Ive just bought a 56 plate 2.0 hdi Berlingo, it got the dreaded knocking noise. The alternator belt looked quite worn and it was getting late so i thought i would cut the belt off to see if the noise would stop!!, thinking no load on the pulley means no noise!!!! Well it is still making the same knocking, i wiped off the rocker box top to see if i could see any broken cam followers but all seems ok, any ideas fellas???

Cant you just take it back if you just bought it on the other hand can you see the crankshaft pulley wobbling , on a works van when it was on its way out there was metal filings in the area of the pulley, i think it was from the bearings breaking down.

I bought the van knowing it has this problem, (Trade Sale) That is why it came at the right price. I will investigate further later today. Never noticed the pulley jumping around, ill take the inner wheel arch covers off and have a look.

Crank pulley going is more a squeaking noise, had it on mine for a while.

Hi, I managed to get a long reach pry bar down onto the bottom pulley, seems to be no movement / play on it. I guess i need to take the cam out and look deeper into this.....

Hi there,

as you now have no auxillary equipment running and its still knocking I'd check the timing incase its skipped teeth on the timing belt.

It could be the pistons hitting the valves if the timing has moved so wouldn't run it too much untill checked timing.

If it slips too much or the belt breaks then it will do some real damage, as it is you could save it.

Check timing first.

I take it the knocking is top end, cam area.

Hope this helps.

Dave.
Smile it's already happened! Big Grin
