Nice one,
Does anybody bother to strip down and overhaul their own gearboxes these days???.
In the world of heavy goods vehicles they still repair gearboxes to some extent but I think that in most other car and light commercial garages it is unit replacement. Ask the mechanics and they probably have not stripped or overhauled a gearbox in ages.

Andy. This depends from country. In a some countries it's cheaper to repair gearbox. We are not alone in this world

Here in England we don't seem to bother so much nowadays. In my youth we used to pull apart and repair gearboxes and engines to our heart's delight. Ford Cortina Mk11's, Escort Mk1 and 2's, used to do them in my sleep.

Some people in UK ( as I know from UK's Peug 206 forum) repair gearboxes. I don't want to say that it's a heart's delight, I think that it' s just a necessity. From my point of view, to spent more than EUR 3000 for "repere" gearbox it's too much.
I don't know what is Tin Lizzy Cortina Mk11, because during this time we almost didn't have car industry.
What is Escort I saw it once or twice. For us it was very funny and rare car All of them was with a hole-ridden bodies in a aftermarket.

You have not heard or seen Ford Cortinas or Ford Escorts, what a shame you have missed out in this life!!!!. Only joking my friend, please appreciate this very British humour.
In their day, 1970's to 1980's era they were a young man's passion and pride and joy. Traditionally they were unreliable, mechanically simple to fix but always needing something fixing and yes, the bodywork seemed to corrode into non-existence before your very eyes.
Probably the modern day equivalents would be the Citroen Saxo, Pugeot 206 or 306 and the Vauxhall Astras and Novas.
How times have progressed!!!!

And Vauxhall Nova it's Opel Corsa?

Hi folks
The download link for the gearbox data is not delivering. Anyone know of another link or could possibly send it to me? (GOT THE LINK NOW - THANKS....wrong box unfortunately!)
I would like to check my gear oil level and possibly change it too. I'm getting a small drip of oil on my drive and it appears to be coming from the near side of the engine. Is this common? I can't seem to tell what the oil is as it doesn't whiff like gear oil used to, but with modern oils perhaps it wouldn't. I suspect it is just engine oil but want to check the gearbox as a precaution. I understand the gear oil is not generally changed in services - is that right or is there a service interval that includes it?
Also are there any known common oil leak points?

It's not done during a service.
If your right hand drive,
Turn your wheel all the way right.
There is a drain point at the Bottom of the gearbox,
Looking in the back part of the front wheel arch and follow the gearbox bolts up the side there's a large bolt at about the 3 o clock position. Fill untill it comes out when the car if level.
Easy enough job.
The drive bearings seem to be bothersome since both of mine are suspect
