Best Engine in a Mk2?

Just wondering what your thoughts are regarding engine choice, heres my thoughts but please correct me if i'm wrong

1.9 very good but painfully slow
2.0 hdi good allrounder
1.6 hdi good but troublsome?

1.6 HDi isn't that bad. It has a weakness with the oil pick up, but bearing in mind how many there are it's not that many have gone bang.

Ive had a 2.0hdi and now got a 1.6hdi. Both the 92hp versions with air con. Both extremely good. The 1.6hdi does benefit from better fuel consumption with the same performance and the all important lower Road Tax Band.

According to the statistics I read before buying the 2.0hdi is slightly more economical on fuel than the 1.6hdi but we bought one because there are more of them, I would happily have had either.

Trouble with the 2.0 is that it is a bit big for the bay, and as they are getting old now, this causes a few problems, The clutch is cable operated, so gets stiff, my wifes Berlingo had a clutch, but is stiff again after about 12 months, she never mentions it, but it would annoy me .
I think you need to move with the times, and the 1.6 is the way to go, just change the oil every 8000 miles.

Are 1.6 clutches hydraulic? my 2.0 clutch is very heavy....

I would recommend the 2.0 HDi but i cant comment on the 1.6 HDi, personally i dont find the clutch heavy at all although i have driven newer vehicles with hydraulic clutch and i personally think they are too light and much prefer a bit of resistance

My 1.6 has a hydraulic clutch.It must be made by Durex 'cos it's featherlight.
