loud whirring road noise
#1
Another newbie! I've an 03 mk2 2.0 hdi desire about 120000 miles. A few months back I noticed a whirring road noise from the front, and not varying on the corners. Just gone for a drive today after the wife has been driving it for a while, and the noise has now got much worse even louder than the engine. I jacked up the front wheels and there is a little play in both... am I looking at wheel bearings or drive bearings of some sort? Will I do further harm by continuing to drive? I'm not mechanical but it would be nice to have some idea before going to the garage!
Brilliant car.

You will not usually get play in a worn wheel bearing, just a roughness when you turn the wheel. Does sound like a wheel bearing tbh, driveshafts dont usually make a load of noise, they just rattle, especially on tight bends.

Not wishing to be facetious, but the other half once arrived home claiming the car wasnt going very well and was making a roaring noise.
The fresh abrasion marks on the road outside led a trail to the traffic cone under the gearboxRolleyes
