10 bleeps when pulling away with lights on
#1
Hi. I've recently bought a X-reg (2000) 1.9 Diesel Multispace Forte. If the lights are on, (sideights or headlights), every time I pull away and get to about 3mph, I get a series of single beeps: there are 10 beeps, about a second apart, and then it stops.
If I turn the lights off during the 10 beeps, it stops beeping. If I turn them back on, it starts beeping again.
If my speed drops below about 3mph, it stops beeping, and then as I get back up to about 3mph it will start it's 10 beeps again.

Anyone got any ideas what could be causing it?

Here's some other info that might or might not be relevant:
All the exterior lights are working. It has got a towbar & single socket. The handbrake light and seatbelt warning lights don't work on the dash. The 'lights left on' audible warning works. As does the 'key left in ignition when door opened' audible warning. The noise I am describing above is not like these, which are a sort of triple-warble. My noise is a series of ten single beeps, about a second apart.

Can anyone shed any light(!) on this?

Thanks

Does your courtesy light flash when this happens?

Hi Coco. No. There doesn't seem to be anything else affected.

In an attempt to shut the bleeping up, I've tried to find the unit that makes the noise, so I can remove/disable it. However, it's difficult to find it as I can't really stick my ear in various places around/under the dash, while driving at above 3mph! I've pin-pointed the thing that makes the noises for 'lights left on" and "keys left in ignition", so maybe it's the same unit. This is part of speedo/instruments unit. It's not removable. Someone has already put a blob of bluetak over it's little hole (where most of the sound comes out), so I've packed foam around it to try to reduce the noise level further: if it's made any difference, (to any of the bleeps) it's not really noticeable so that was a waste of time. While it was out, I took the instrument panel apart further because the handbrake and seatbelt warning lights weren't working. I found that actually they are both working and are both on all the time: It's just that the LEDs have bluetak over them, so the lights can not be seen! I've left the bluetak there.

So, I still have this irritating bleeping.

I would check all warning lights illuminate when you first turn the key in the ignition, there could be an issue not being illuminated on the dash; oil level? Failing that, is your seat belt on?

First thing to try is a BSI reset. I assume that yours will have one but I don't know much on the M49:-

Peugeot Citroen cars have a “B S I” (Body Systems Interface) ECU.

This system holds information for immobiliser, mileage display, lighting and many other Peugeot Citroen programmed settings.

The software that controls the operation of these systems can become corrupted if the battery has been replaced and the “BSI” has not gone to sleep before disconnection of old battery or been woken up after reconnection of new battery or sometimes for no good reason at all!

Think of it as running your laptop on the battery and then removing the battery without shutting it down., not a good idea.

The system can be rebooted if a problem has occured so all is not lost.

Follow this procedure for the reset (reboot).

Have the drivers window fully open.

Open the bonnet and make sure all equipment is switched off including interior light.

Close all doors and remove key from the ignition.

Wait 3 minutes, disconnect the vehicle battery then wait 15 seconds.

Reconnect the vehicle battery and wait a further 10 seconds.

Switch on the side lights through the driver’s window.

Switch on the ignition DO NOT start the engine at this point.

Hold the lock button on the key down for 10 seconds while key is still in the ignition.

Switch off ignition and remove key open & close door to test central locking system.

Start the engine.
Then report back

Hi Coco. Thanks very much for that, which all sounds fine, except that my car does not have a button on the key. (It does not have central locking). Can I still do it somehow?
Thanks

At that point, test everything else - indicators, lights etc - then switch off, remove key, open & close door and test central locking then open door and start engine

Ok. I'll try that (minus testing the central locking, which it doesn't have) and get back to you later.
Thanks very much.

Is that not what it does when you've not fastened your seatbelt? Odd that the lights set it off though, otherwise I'd suspect a problem with the switch in the seatbelt clip.

Doh - should have read the whole lot. Though the blue tak over the lights suggests there a problem with the dahsboard electrics that the previous owner hid from you when you bought it.

The seat belt light is on constantly, (behind the bluetak!). When I discovered it, I made sure all the seatbelts were done up, in case it thought someone was sitting on a seat somewhere. That made no difference. The driver's seat is absolutely knackered: is there a sensor in that one that may be broken/disconnected and could that make the seatbelt light come on? As you say though, it's a bit strange that, (if it is related to the seatbelt light), it only bleeps if the lights are on.

I've done that Coco, but can't get out of my drive at the moment, (and my drive isn't long enough to get up to 3mph!) so I'll test the bleeping tomorrow and update you. Thanks.
