How to remove the alternator

Cut a long story short;

Noise from engine has got worse over the last few weeks. Van feels sluggish. Local mechanic (in passing) said 99% alternator was on its way out. New alternator purchased. Driving home last night battery light came on. Van won't start this morning. Got it going with a jump. Lasted 2 minutes before it died.

It's snowing. No garage is open. Need the van for Monday.

Can it be changed on the drive. If so, is there a how to/guide?

Petrol or diesel ? Petrol by the sound of it if it cut out again. It's a 3 spanner job in the Haynes' manual but it doesn't look any more complicated than any other vehicle. Only the bolts for the alternator and adjuster but there might be some stuff to move depending on which engine.
