Front and rear washers working simultaneously
#1
Hi All

This has just suddenly happened. If I try to use the rear wash/wipe the front washers come on but not the front wipers (although the rear wash/wipe works perfectly). The front wash/wipe also works fine.

Could it be a faulty washer control arm or do I need a BSI reset? And is there a sticky with the BSI reset procedure on it? I've tried searching but with no luck

Would of thought it will be the stalk, but worth giving the reset a try.

Cant see that working, as I see it, the pump does front and rear, so must change direction for front or rear, if this is the case both together is not possible ?

At a fiver a go I would change the pump first.

I know it doesn't seem possible but it that's what's happening. I'm not imagining it.

I not quite understanding this thread but could it be a faulty valve in the washer hoses ie back flow. Something similar happened on a punto I had which was down to a one way valve

I'll try anything cheap once. Although I can't see that working either.
Basically what's happening is if I try to wash the rear window the front washers operate as well. So the back window gets washed and wiped but all the front gets is a screen full of water; which is not what you need at 70 on the motorway.

I understand now, do you know if your pump has twin outputs if so it could possibly be that. I cant see it being much else on a simple washer system but hey it is french lol, Hope you get it sorted

2004 Berlingo? I would think the pump has developed a problem.
Not a faulty one way valve as there would be no way of selecting that
electrically. As Lighty suggested it has to be the pump given the information we have.
The pump chamber probably has two outlets controlled by rubber flap valves
and the direction of flow will be governed by the direction of the motor.
If the 'front wash flap valve' has broken it'll still work fine for Screen washing
but for rear window washing water will be expelled from both outlets.

Hmmm. I did a BSI reset last night and it didn't solve the problem then BUT when I started the car this morning it was fine.

However there was a bit of a funny thing. When I did the reset I didn't actually start the car just checked that it locked and set the clock. This morning when I tried to start the car there was a loud bong from the warning system (like the sound when you set the doors to lock as the car moves off) and the car refused to start. The clock display reset to 00:00. I tried again, another loud bong and no start. Tried a third time and it started ok. I presume this is normal?

If you've had the battery disconnected, make sure the connections are on correctly.
