Haynes suggest 40,000. I'd err on the side of caution myself and get it changed reasonably soon.

Hi, I have just bought a MK1 with 100,000 on the clock...the timing belt was changed at 70,000 miles according to what is written on the engine...I am always cutious and was wondering what time interval the water pump should be replaced,to save destroying the engine.Any advice would be appretiated, thank you.

If the MOT is due then just remember that when they do the emmissions test they rev the nuts off it. They will accept no reposibility is it breaks and wrecks your engine.
We have always changed our timing belts much sooner than recommended. I do ours on the DW8 engine at 50000mile intervals. It may seem a tad expensive but it is cheaper than a knackered engine. If I was buying second hand I would change it straight away regardless of what has been said by the previous owner.
