Opening rear tailgate screen
#1
Hi, apologies in advance if I'm missing something pretty obvious. I purchased a used 2012 xtr a month ago and have just realised it has an opening tailgate screen, at least I think it has, it has outside hinges and inside hydraulic struts. Thick question...how do I open it? The handbook says 'press the control and raise the rear screen to open it'...what control and where is it?. Thanks.

Put you fingers where you open the tailgate then move them 4 inches to the right and push upward.

Brilliant, thanks Trevor, I don't feel quite so thick now.

Couple of bits of advice:
Watch the struts. There was a recall on these, as the mounting points can rotate slightly, causing the rod to pop off the screen. Although I think only the earlier ones were affected and a minor design (or torque wrench setting) change fixed it.

Make sure you don't move the windscreen wiper whilst its open, or if you do, make sure its back in its proper position or you'll get some odd behaviour and some nasty noises.

I've seen reports on another forum (can't remember where) about the windows exploding - possibly when the heater has been on and they've been shut vigorously. I always close it as gently as possible, pushing on the windscreen wiper pivot rather than the glass.

One other thing - you can't open the window if the whole tailgate is open (and vice versa). So if the window doesn't pop open when you press the lever, check the main tailgate is latched properly.

Apart from the exploding window, I've had all the others.

Nice one Guanajuato, thanks for the info. Yes, I closed it using the wiper pivot as I thought might be a bit dodgy pressing on the glass. Cheers.

Excellent advice. I picked up my 65 plate XTR Yesterday after 12 years with an 03 and thought I was stupid as well.
