Well that would make sense with the trouble you had.

Just wondered why the bloke who serviced it and shrugged his shoulders didn't change the plugs or even check them!! Sounds like someone else for you to avoid in future!!

I have had plugs loosen over time, so that's probably not uncommon, but I would expect the service to include looking at them and nipping them tight if they were in good order.

Many decades ago when I had a Mk.I Cortina GT I used to clean and re-gap plugs but, it seems
because of escalating labour costs it is a practice that many garages won't any longer carry out.
It's cheaper to simply replace the plugs. I've still got my 'Champion' gapping tool too!
Handy on the bikes!

I still have to gap mine...

Whilst most plugs are now supplied pre-gapped, because mine runs on LPG, which requires a good spark, you have to close them down a tad....

I change them every six months to keep them tip top....so my gapping tool gets used twice a year.
