overheating

were the fans running

type of engine

mileage

age of vehicle

were you in trafic or moving - last time serviced

although we could point you in the right direction without this info it is much better to have the info for correct diag.

its 2.0 hdi 03 plate with 58,000 on clock
it sounds like fan was running should the fan come on straightaway?
fan wasnt turning (just took it run round the block)

No the fans will only cut in when the temp gets to about 95.

if the fans were on and it still overheated like you described with the header tank bubbling it could be a sticking thermostat, head gasket or blocked radiator.

how far can you drive before it starts to overheat?

i had done about 6or7 miles before i noticed the temp gage had shot right up

i would say change the thermostat first - quite cheap and easy to get, right hand side of head looking from front of vehicle.

Check your cooling liquid - In this time of year, I would look for frozen coolant blocking flow through the radiator.
