1.9 DW8 Fuel Consumption

I am looking to buy a MK1 Berlingo for work - In the past I have had a 2.0hdi that averaged 44mpg (Combined) and a pre facelift MK1 1.9 on an X reg that worked out about the same but my last place of work had a 2005 Berlingo 1.9 DW8 and that thing only ever managed 30 - 35mpg.
Is this common on post 2002 DW8's??? I know they are pretty slow and have a lot of weight to lug around but the low thirties mpg always seemed really bad to me, especially as we had a non turbo 1.9 Citroen Dispatch that was even bigger and heavier and still managed 32 to 35 mpg - It was always serviced regularly and was bad on fuel loaded or not.
I am lured toward the 1.9 DW8 for long term reliability but when you are self employed and fuel costs come off your bottom line then you have to ask some questions first !

I have a 51 plate 1.9 multispace and I am getting around 42-44 out of mine.

I previously owned an 05 plate 1.9d & it would average about 44mpg locally & also on a motorway trip at 60-65mph. Faster than that & it dropped to 40. I never used to rev the engine though but driving like that progress is fairly slow, to get anywhere you had to rev it through the gears which decreased mpg considerably. I think the problem is that the engine has little power & poor torque so if van is heavily laden or driven hard mpg will fall more sharply than turbo diesel.

If your work is fairly local though I think you would still be better off with 1.9 due to cheaper repair costs of old technology diesel.

Thanks chaps, I think the works van must've had something wrong with it to only be returning low 30's - Just got to find a decent 1.9 van now !
I would love another hdi as they are so much more flexible on the road but the 1.9's are just so basic & reliability counts for a lot when your wages depend on it :thumbsup:

i wouldnt have another hdi whilst i can get a 1.9

Thought I'd throw in my opinion. I've got a 1.9d and get about 40-45 mpg with mixed driving. Mine has done 192000 miles now and as long as coolant and oil are changed regularly, they are great engines... if terribly slow

44 mpg out of my 1.9 DW8 on average. Can go down to 40 or up to 47 if I'm mega careful but 43-44 seems normal.

Had 2 identical 1.9s back in the late 90s. Sequential numbers on the number plates even. One would do an indicated 100mph on the flat (private road obviously) and 45mpg when driven sensibly. The other struggled to top 80 and never did more than 37mpg. Weird. They were both similar mileages and both erm, well run in..

I do around 400 miles to a tank before the reserve light comes on.

I thought that was 45mpg but turns out it's more like 35mpg.

I usually carry a fair amount of tools and cable but try not to rag it too much.

Not great really, but what can you do?

One thing I have found is DO NOT BE SHY of the accelerator on the motorway if you get the chance for a long flat out run. Andover to Chertsey on the M3/M25, foot down the whole way resulted in a much livelier engine around town. It has much more kick around 2500rpm, which conversely means you don't need to rev it round the clock to get moving.
