I reckon this would make the vehicle unacceptably draughty on the move, and when used as intended the upholstery would be in a bit of a state....

Mine's got that, too - and it's in Rosso Corsa (or as the French call it, Rouge something-or-other).
Given our local wallopers will fatally taser someone armed with a biscuit, I am quite certain pointing a ladder out like that would invite a drone strike.
