petrol stinks, fumes are carcenogenic, and it catches fire..... having been strapped in a petrol car and seen the smoke starting to come from under the bonnet . diesel is actually quite difficult to accidentally set on fire. i dont need to know a lot more.
but when i had my last petrol car...mk5 cortina, diesel was more economic and diy servicing was simpler and cost less. change oil and filters on a diesel and yer done.... petrols then had points, carbs, ignition timing that all needed adjusting , with plug , plug leads, dizzy caps and coils that needed regular replacement... in the 80.s and 90's it was a no brainer...simply diesel was cheaper and more reliable.
current new cars diesels have more electronics and are hence less reliable/more difficult to troubleshoot than they were . cant comment on modern petrols cos ive no experience of them. but they seem to have just as much electronic crap on them.

They're all blighted; drivetrain products are rushed to market without sufficient real-world evaluation of how they'll fare or how practically repairable they may be.

The problem is now solved. It was a blocked catalytic converter. Thanks to Breedon and Gell of Darlington. They fitted a new cat and now the Berlingo drives like new.

Top Gear says the Berlingo petrol has the same acceleration as the MK1 Golf GTi (clunk) and BHP.
I DO MISS MY BERLINGO

Well, the Berlingo ran fine for 4 months. The bloody thing is back to square one again. In March, the garage had to fit a new cat as the old one was choked solid with crap. The problem is back again, loss of power, and knocking every so often, it's back in the garage again on the 15th. This is the last straw, once it is sorted it's going the distance!!!

The mechanic phoned today. He didn't mention that it was showing any fault codes. He asked if the problem began before or after the new clutch was fitted. I am not 100% certain, but I think it was after. The mechanic thinks a sensor in the clutch or gearbox may be causing automatic advancing. I have had enough of this vehicle!
