MK1 2.0HDI using/losing coolant
#1
As above, coolant level warning light came on the other day so I topped it up to the max line, 200 miles later and it's used/lost. 250ml of coolant.

I can't see any evidence of loss under the bonnet, no visible leaks, no water in the oil and vice versa.

Is there any common problems with coolant loss on these vehicles? what should I be looking for, I've not noticed any water inside indicating matrix leak, but then, I haven't really looked :p

Help! please! Big Grin

Hi steve,

Have seen leaks around the thermostat housing on your model before. Check for whitish deposits around and about the bottom rad hose too. Is worth checking all the hoses really for splits and cracks. Also around the oil cooler at the base of the oil filter, these are prone to failure... but will chuck out a bit of oil into the cooling system.

good hunting.....

still got this leak, thought it would have fixed itself by now! Big Grin

There does appear to be a little whitish deposit around where the thermostat housing meets the head, where the temperature sender is, you can just see it just above where the blue bleed cap is here;

I wonder if it's worth my while replacing that gasket? unsure of what it is though?

Seems a bit minor for the amount of coolant you are losing Steve??

How hot is your van getting?

Van runs at normal temps, when you work it out it's using 1.25ml per mile which is a very minor leak, it will be difficult to spot as it will probably be lost as steam.

Just put in some holts radweld see if that fixes it.

I told it I still love it, even though it's giving me a little problem Big Grin

by any chance has your windscreen been a lot more prone to misting up recently?

No, windscreen is fine, and it's not the matrix ( hopefully! )

Van has lost no more coolant in 1500 miles since the radweld was added, hooray!!

Hmmm, we have had coolant loss recently, and the mechanic thinks the head gasket may be at fault = £££ :-(

We also have a misting up windscreen... does this mean a leaking heater matrix = really big job? :-( :-(
