In a word.... Nothing!
The 1.9d (not a Hdi) is slow and steady, not a lot can be done.
Clean oil and air filter, blank off egr, de-cat, none make much difference to performance but are good for the health of the engine

yep pretty much, I made one myself that blanks off the exhaust manifold outlet to the egr. Think you can get them on ebay though? Removed the pipe to air intake and the solenoid too, but most connectors have to remain in place to avoid engine management light issues.

I'd do some research before you go doing anything, if you can't figure out if your car has a turbo or not (can you hear one whistle when you accelerate??) then it would be a good idea to find out.
Generally, if it's a 1.9 then it'll be the non-turbo XUD engine (70Bhp), if it's a 2.0Hdi then it will be the DW10 turbo-diesel engine (90Bhp).
Have a search on this forum, being able to have the engine mapped depends on whether it has a Bosch or Siemens injection system fitted.
If it's a 1.9 non-turbo then yeah it's going to feel pretty slow, I'm not sure that there's much you can do (without it costing an arm and a leg), maybe better to start off with one of the other engines to begin with?

Thanks guys, Yeh there's no turbo, had a look done the back of the engine. Looks like I've got a 70ps. Seen a blanking plate for the egr on eBay for 3.50, so might get that. Will get the engine code and report back later tonight.
