May just be the rocker box cover which is frequently over tightened causing a leak
around the then distorted gasket.
But if you've witnessed a compression leak from No 3 then you have to ask yourself
why this hasn't been sorted out for the vehicle sale if it's a simple job?
Pull the injector clean the area replace the 'O' rings/washer and re-assemble
.....sounds simple enough...Why hasn't it been done, and how long has it been running like this?

That would explain the oil from the top. Do u think the injector is just not tight as its leaking? Im not sure how the fittings are around them

If the injector has been leaking for any length of time (over) tightening it
may make the problem worse. That may be what's already been done!

Hmmm...it's better to wait until one of the guys familiar with the Mk.1 1.9 diesel
reads the post.
I'm absolutely sure that they will know!

Thank you all for your help but i got rid of the van for an 04 plate 1.9D
They seem a lot more popular and hoping i have less problems with it
Ill open a separate thread for the 1.9 as it could be confusing for someone reading
Thanks again for all your input
