Rear door roller track
#1
Hi. I got a 2009 Berlingo VTR a few weeks back and I have noticed that when the rear doors open there is a kind of crackling sound. Looking closer, there is a roller wheel at the bottom that runs along what looks like a plastic strip, and on my car this strip seems to be kind of hard and cracked.

Is this normal, or should I look at replacing this strip at some point?

The old addage 'a stitch in time saves nine' runs against the other one 'If it aint broke..'

I had a quick look at mine to see if it would all be robust enough to not bother with but mine is a later commercial model and it has metal rollers within metal tracking.

The only thing I can think that would be a problem is if the track lost some broken sections it would batter or jam into the running gear as it rode over the gaps
If the lost sections were at the end of the run the door alignment would interfere with the latch and the seal.

If there are only little cracks and the pieces are still firmly attached its probably best to leave it until it starts to get worse
It is on my to do list.
But not right at the top

Thanks for your reply. I was intrigued by the metal rollers in a metal track part so I had another look and mine is the same. The bit that I thought was a plastic strip is actually the paint on the track being worn away and breaking up.

If the track is steel then I guess it will rust, which is not nice. But if it is aluminium then I may as well let the paint flake off and not worry about it.

Time to find a magnet I think...

Mine started doing the same a few weeks back. Its just paint bubbles as far as I can tell. Suggests some kind of corrosion underneath, but I'm not scraping the paint off to find out as that'll just encourage more.

Some grease will help ( not sure about waxoyl in these current temperatures) but I have an inkling it may be galvanised steel anyway.
It is on my to do list.
