i have a 2008 1.6 hdi desire with the same problem only part of the numbers showing does this mean a new screen or bulb replacement?

Your best bet is to take the display out and test or replace the bulbs it takes about 5 minutes, then if its still the same get another display. Make a note of the part number on the back as there are a few different versions.
