Just found this site .
Very helpful tips so far.
Bought a 57plate 1.6hdi xtr+ van with 73k from the local auction last week.
On the drive home the steering was terrible, sticking bad and the gear box was so stiff it was near impossible to change gear.
Thought I had bought a dud from the auction and was regretting my purchase.
A look on the net found this site and after doing a few searches here my van is going great.
Wd40 and copper grease on the gear linkage also the swivel joint on the steering rod and its like new!

Yes, that was the first thing I tried, but it made no difference. (Will have done it good though)
The u/j on the steering rod was totally dry of any lube as was the gear linkage and I suspect it's been sitting a while.
Next is a oil and filter change.
