How straight forward is a 1.9D to 2ltr HDi swap?
#1
Well then, I have a question..
I seem to like the Berlingo more each day so I have asked a mate of mine to let me know how much it would cost to make a floorplate for the back so that I can fit the carseat safely.
I have some nice cyclone alloys of my 306 that I might fit over the next few days to make the feel a bit better..

I am just wondering how difficult an engine swap would be.
I have my 2ltr. Turbo HDi 306 sat in the garage that I am breaking for parts..
The engine is brilliant and I am considering to put it in the Berlingo to give it a little more powet and better fuel economy..

Any ideas?

Piece of cake really......NOT....

Providing that the engine marries up to the gearbox correctly and the clutch is the right one and the engine mountings are in the right place.

Oh and the wiring will all have to be changed as the 2.0HDI has sensors all over the place and the ECU to be wired in plus other bits and bobs so you will also probably need the 2.0HDI wiring loom made for the Berlingo

Is the radiator the same?

Pipework to the fuel system?

In short, not such an easy job

I see your point...
However I have the whole car... (the 306 that is)
So I can transfer everything in the engine bay and I also plan on swapping the gearbox unless it is a "bolt on" job with the box that is there..
The engine mounts look the same although I have not got the measuring tape out yet..
I assume it must be fairly close though.
I mean the Berlingo is made with that 2ltr in as well..

I just think that with new shocks and springs, polybushed all the way through and the 2ltr HDi turbo in that it will be superb...

My mate is a diesel mechanic so I was going to try and get him to spend a day with me to do the job..

I see what you mean however I have the whole

Oh by the way andy-womble I just see you have a factory 2ltr would it be possible for you to post a pic of your engine bay? So that I can see what it looks like?

Is there any chance you can post a picture of your engine bay?
Just so I can see what it looks like...?!

Thanks in advance..

Wouldn´t it be easier just to get a different car seat?

nope lol... I have explained it in another post... Big Grin
But the floor plate shud be fine...

And regardless of that I think the trusted 2ltr engine would be a good replacement for the high mileage 1.9 that is in there...

I'll see what I can do, wifey has the motor during the week as a shopping trolley and for work, too late now as it is going dark.

Just another thought, Will the drive shafts marry up to the gearbox ok re splines and fitment of seals on gearbox. Need to check first as may be difficult to rectify later

I would also allow longer than a day for fitment in case you hit any snags....

Thanks for all the advice..
I have just spoken to a mechanic who deals with these cars on a daily basis..

:censored:

He said that it can be done BUT.....

It is going to be the biggest a-circle of a job imaginable..
So he said it's not worth the hassle..

Back to the drawing board.... :dislike:

Might have to sell it like planned originally and get a newer Berlingo with the 2ltr HDi engine in..

I'd just like to give my ten pennyworth on this subject and as I'm now a Senior Citizen I've seen a few things.

Having still got a Peugeot MK1 405 GLD 1.9 estate (laid up at present) and a Peugeot 306 Meridian HDi which is used as a runabout I would say that going from a 1.9 drive-by-cable engine to a 2 litre drive-by-wire engine is a very bad move.  The reason is that the 405 is RELIABLE whilst the much newer 306 is UNRELIABLE.  OK the HDi does start first time every time but at about every five miles it is liable to do a "fluff".  When this happens the power dwindles to almost nothing for about a second but lifting the accelerator does help to clear it.  There are no fault lights on.  The possibilities are Throttle Position Sensor, wiring loom problems as the power unit flexes on its mountings and of course the High Pressure Pump.  Two stroke oil has been added to the fuel to try to make it more oily but whilst the fluffing is no worse than before its not really much better.  A new High Pressure Pump costs more than the car is worth and of course its a cam-belt job. Whilst the HDi is a bit more lively than the 1.9 non-turbo there is not really that much in it and with the HDi being untrustworthy I think it is time for it to go to the crusher.  Modern drive-by-wire car are like that and that is exactly what my nephew did with his Seat Ibiza.  Allegedly it had an excellent body and almost a years MOT but recurring electrical problems made the car worthless.  My nephew works as an Industrial Electronics Technician so if he couldn't fix the Seat it would be hard luck on anyone else!  Sometimes replacing the alternator with one that uses Zener diode rectifiers helps as this type allegedly cannot produce voltage spikes.  Even so when one has a drive-by-wire engine that is festooned with with transducer modules that cost between £100 and £200 each, one needs a very fat wallet.  In fact I know someone who spent £3,500 at a Main Dealer in order to try to prevent his VW Caddy van from intermittently going into Limp Home Mode.  It took six or seven visits and possibly the car-crusher option would have been more economic!  Take care!

i'd use a xud turbo lump out of a 306 i've owned 2 peugeots with hdi engines in them both were problems all the xud turbo motor's i've owned have been loads better far less tech same mpg easier to tune (don't need a laptop)
