Rubber "bit" at base of windscreen

Excuse the title, but other than "rubber bit", I didn't know what to call it!

Problem or "feature", what do you think?

I decided to clear all the leaves & stuff from the base of my Mk3 van windscreen. With the bonnet up, I noticed the soundproofing on the firewall was wet near both sides. So.... I lifted out the "rubber bits" on both sides.

Sure, the leaves & rubbish came out, but when I came to put them back in, 2 things sprang to mind.

1. The very top bit (pointy bit) of rubber (nearest the screen base) doesn't seem quite right tucked in under the hard plastic, as the hinge scrapes it, but looks wrong left sticking out!

2. Putting what amounts to a bit of rubber sponge here, just seems to hold water and still lets it leak into the engine compartment onto the soundproofing. What's it doing? I mean, officially?

The whole arrangement, with the hard plastic bit in the corner and then a bit of rubber, seems like it's made with leftover bits from the parts bin.

Anyone got any thoughts as to how it should be and is yours different?

That'll teach me to venture out in the sun and start doing something on the van!

Nope have two soft rubber bits as well, I have no idea what they do, but mine are dry.

As long as the rubber bits are wet on the inside only,I wouldn't worry.
But that's only my opinion(for what it's worth).:drool::whistle:

Mine was full of compost too but hadnt got any of the soundproofing wet

The drains are now clear so water should flush away before it spills over onto the soundproof material

The rubber is closed cell so its not a sponge, it does not hold water. Remove it & you might have a rattling bonnet.

Anyway, I agree the rubber is closed cell, but mine's wet where it sits over the bits it covers and it lets water drip down the soundproofing on both sides. Nice to see it forms a little birds nest of leaves too. Even on a 6 month old van, there are stains where it is wetting the top corner of the soundproofing. Remains to be seen whether the water eventually eats away a bit of the van. :S
