new cam belt whine
#1
Hi, I've just joined this forum. I'm based in the Midlands and have owned a 2.0 hdi Berlingo from new (in December 2002). Its been really good - only had one broken front spring, one failed alternator, and one leak on the injector common rail, since new.

As it's 11 years old and has done around 80K miles I decided to have a new cam belt fitted. They changed the water pump at the same time as it had a very slight leak.

Since having the new belt fitted there has been a noticeable whine - engine speed related and from the cam belt area. I thought this might be just the new belt bedding in, but after a few thousand miles it hasn't got any quieter.

Is this to be expected or might there be some problem with the belt/ how it was fitted?

Thanks

Bob.

It shouldn´t whine - take it straight back to the garage who did the work.

it may be the serpent (auxilary) belt or associated components (power steering pump or alternator)making the noise you could remove the serpent belt and start her up and see if it stops.

I had the same problem on my Citroen Saxo after new cambelt fitted turned out to be the alternator belt had been put on too tight when refitted.

whining can be a sign of an overtight belt
