This isnt mk2 specific so I will post here, it is just general info really. Yesterday I was at work, the van parked and I had been busy about 2 hours or so. The car was a few feet away. Suddenly there was a huge bang, something like a large plate glass window cracking under tension, loud enough to make me duck instinctively. I checked around no sign of any damage anywhere so I looked around the van thinking one of the windows cracked in the sun, nothing. Puzzled I finished up and went to go, to find a horrible banging from the steering. Looked around again took a wheel off searched underneath, still nothing obvious. So I called the breakdown service co it was obvious it wasnt drivable. Oh yes he says immediately, that would be a coil spring breaking, they do that, we get several calls a week for it. The only sign of a problem was that the van was about a cm or two lower on that side cos the spring had failed at the very top and there was no obvious damage to it. If I hadnt been close I would not have known except of course for the resulting noise from turning the wheel.
Just thought I would pass this on cos I never heard of this before and had no idea that a spring could fail spontaneously while parked.
Happy motoring.
