Brake Vacuum Pump
#1
In relation to sludge/carbon deposit build up; I was going to remove the Brake Vacuum Pump for inspection . (I have read it is a good place to look) Does anyone have any opinions, thoughts, knowledge, experience of this job - anything I need to know in advance?

It couldn't of been a simpler job, under 15 minutes and no gaskets to worry about.- So here's a really basic guide in how to remove the vacuum pump to inspect for any signs of sludge, Carbon Deposits, gunge etc that can affect this engine with disastrous consequences.

1) Remove the intake air ducting to air filter and from air filter to turbo. The only dilemma I had here was how does the air-filter to turbo ducting detach. You will see on the first photo, "B" has a ball on the end, the ducting just pulls off and pushes of this.

2) Detach vacuum hose "C" then undo bolts "A" & "B" and vacuum pump just pulls free.

The last two pictures show that the pump is clean with no sludge build up, and the pump housing is also free from any gunge.

word of warning - if while cleaning the vacuum pump of excess oil before reassembly, be warned that if you turn the impeller round by hand, it suddenly and unexpectedly vomits out a big globual of oil - right on the kitchen table, just seconds after the wife said "get that thing out of the house"
