No Horn Syndrome

Dead horn ...... This seems to be a comon fault.
What puzzles me as an electronic engineer is :-

Question 1
Has a complex multiplex wiring system been used just to sound the horn ? :brickwall:

Question 2
How do I remove the steering wheel horn pad.

Question 3
Is it feasable to pass wires down the steering column to get back to basic circuitry ?

Any advice appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the forum. I can't offer any sensible advice or suggestions with this one, but I am sure that one of the more technically able members will be along to help soon.

Didn't Andre do an in depth description of how to remove steering wheel and air bag etc which is all part of a similar job???

Think the horn is wired through an ecm and have also read of cases where owners have fitted a separate push button switch on the dash and wired the horn in that way, thus effectively by-passing the electronic control "gismo"

Worth having a trawl around the forum for same/similar occurences

I did this thread on how to get to the COM2000

During that process, you do get to the horn wiring at the steering wheel end, and can follow it through for a good while, but im not sure about all the way.

Think your write-up guided the reader through the more difficult and dodgy bits of the job though, in particular the removal of the air bag.

Hopefully. The hardest bit, as you say, is finding that metal 'bar' that runs throughout the back of the airbag. But once you have done it, its easy.

I have wired a bypass on the dash. As the car is going to daughter and I am an electronic genius Confusedunny:Well! The family think so ….
There might be some sarcasm coming my way.
Will trawl the postings.

Just looked at Andre’s post . Excellent instruction. But I chicken out.

Car hand over, I am now informed, is tomorrow. I know a lot about conveiour belt 30 min jobs. :eek:

Must put an inline fuse today !
Next time she is home with time to spare ..... :whistle:

Thanks more to Andre than to me!, he did the original "leg-work" in posting and photographing the "How To".
Somehow, I remembered I'd read it somewhere....

Got to admit that automotive wiring, electronics and some of the mechanical stuff is getting a bit beyond me these days and whereas in previous years I would cheerfully wade in, take something apart and generally manage an effective "Fix", nowadays firstly one has to examine the job to see if any other problems, damage and consequential expense can be incurred by going in "Hammer Happy"

I have fixes a fault horn myself quite successfully
Found it was the ribbon cable snapped caused airbag light and horn not to work
Depends on the com2000 unit you have
Mine is a DAV unit I cut of the broken end shortened the ribbon cable and re-soldered to the socket on the back of the airbag unit
was fiddly and took sometime!
I will see if I can post up some pictures of how soon?
to reply to your questions
1. No Its not hi-tech a simple if bad design
3. yes its only a pass thought wire just a bitch being a ribbon cable
which passes trough airbag warning light and horn only on mine
If you have ESP brake a little extra care on column centering
