Did you have a moped?
#21
By god you guys aint half going back some years eh lmao to the land of ap50's and the likes when the biking scene was cheap and a boy @ 16 bcould actually afford to insure a bike "moped" maybe if this was the route that todays kids had to start out instead of a souped up old banger the roads would be a bit safer in my humble opinion every driver on the road should have to do a year or to on two wheels and then the youngsters would be aware of so much more ie road surfaces pot holes and the dreaded manhole covers but try getting insurance now at 16 or even under 25 is silly silly money then they wonder why insurance fronting goes on or uninsured drivers ..... happy biking memorys guyz...

Yep - many many mopeds, bikes, cars etc..First one was a 50cc 2 stroke thing,
cannot recall name - then Francis Barnet light cruiser, Matchless, Triumph speed twin with sidecar, even a 600cc single Panther! Try kicking that over on frosty mornings..First car 1936 banger which I swapped for a 250cc BSA side valve with no dynamo - had no licence for it, my mum removed rotor arm (as she remembered from WW2), so I could not drive it. special times, anyhow something clicked as I ended up driving instructor for 12 years and successful.

Had a succession of mopeds when I was 16,but I can't remember what the hell they were, but all my mates had mopeds and we used to go all over the place on them, every weekend, rain or shine, summer and winter.
I then went straight onto car ownership when I was 17,so never took a bike test, wish I had of done though as it was a piece of cake then.

Funnily enough I've been to look at some Chinese made 50cc and 125cc scooters today as I always wanted a Lambretta back in the day, though during the mid-60's I was too young during the heyday of mods and rockers, but always remember watching the hundreds of mods going past our house on their way to Margate every weekend during the summer.

A chinese made 125cc scooter (which looks uncannily like a Lambretta) can be had here for less than €1500 brand new,and there's only insurance and fuel to worry about. No tax,no MoT.......ever!
And,so I found out today,no bike of any engine size has to be taxed or tested in Belgium,no matter what age it is!
A 50cc scooter/moped is limited to either 25kph or 45kph,but a 125cc can do over 100kph.
A 125cc can also be driven on a normal car licence as long as you've held it for at least two years and you are at least twenty years old.No problem on that front then!

I had a 2002 52 plate Italjet Dragster, i know i not going back as far as some of you guys and maybe some of you may never have heard of it lol.

It was a 50cc and cost nearly £2000 at the time as a package with all safety clothing, locks, tax, insurance and cbt test, it was a great bike and had it for 4 years until i passed my car test in november 2006.

Certainly did! Used ride around the local fields on all sorts before i did the then brand new CBT.
Started on a Puch MS50 with no brakes that i got going again after over a decade laid up. Honda C90 that i chopped the rear mudguard off, kicked off the plastics, removed the front forks and fitted (shock horror) Gilera 50 trail telescopic forks and some chunky knobbley tyres. A Honda MB50. a Motobecane pedal and go, and another Gilera 50 trial.

First on the road though was a Yamaha RD50 that i bought written off for £18 advertised in the Exchange and Mart, fixed it up and got 'Q' plated which was very cool at the time because 'G' reg was still pretty recent and many mistook the Q for a G. Two DVLA representatives actually came to my parents house to read the chassis and engine numbers to confirm the bikes identity! Can you imagine getting that kind of service from them these days?!?!

Happy care free days, no mobile phones to bother you then, didn't even have a watch!

I kicked off with a Lambretta TV175 - the envy of my mates who only had 125's, before graduating to a Norton Dominator. Paid £150 for the Lambretta and £125 for the Domi (which was in ratty cafe racer form). I'm still amazed I didn't kill meself when I think back....

I started off in 1963 with a 150cc Lambretta D, I think it was a 1956 model.

Very similar to this..
