Ah...
The old Hing Hong Ting Tong specials?:ban:
Useful for keeping the wheels off the ground; but not a lot else.
Not much good when accelerating, or steering, or braking.:dislike:

I managed to get a puncture the other day. The tyres are almost worn to the wear indicator (about a mm left), so its not worth repairing. Nearly 20,000 miles on the original Michelin Energy tyres. Most of our driving is on twisty roads, either round the lakes or over the dales to parents on the right side of the pennines.

I was shocked to find out the price of the michelins was well over £100 a corner.
I rang round a few places and they all quoted much the same. So I decided to try cheaper ones. I had a horrendous experience in the past with cheap tyres before - Citroen garage in Basingstoke quoted a figure of about £70 a tyre for my old ZX, so I assumed they were using michelins. They put 'General' tyres on that last about 6k. General, Enduro, Toyo and Michelin were the options I had. So I went for some mid-range Toyo Proxes CF1, which seem to be a reasonable tyre based on the reviews I can find. At £10 more than the cheapy Generals & Enduros, it made sense.

What surprised me was the Citroen franchise (Kendal Citroen) were the cheapest when I rang round. Cheaper by a couple of pound per tyre, so not a huge difference. £67 per corner all in. Strangely, they look taller than the michelins, but they are definitely the same size.

I'll try and make some comment when I've driven a little more - its difficult to see any difference in a 2 mile drive from the dealer to home.

Surprised you went to a dealer for tyres as I reckon they'll always be more expensive than tyre dealers. I used North West Tyres in Kendal a couple of years ago and they were great, good value, stocked the brand / type of tyre I was after (All Season Vredestein).

After the past few winters I won't have anything less than this type of tyre now, or at least not while we're living in the Dales!!

I was as surprised as you!
But the dealer was cheaper than Greenbanks, National Tyres, the budget place by the station and all the on-line places I looked.
Greenbanks on Appleby Road seems to be THE place for winter tyres.

Hi Guana...
I paid £40 each for a pair of Toyo Proxes CF1's.
Thats fitted, balanced and new valves.
Been using Toyo Proxes for years, seem really good tyres for the price. Never had CF1's till now.
Only had them about 6 weeks, so no long term reports yet.
Had some serious heavy showers here in last few days, stuck to the road like glue. So no problems with wet weather performance.

Hello Martin,
Getting due for a pair of tyres on the front. Where did you get the Toyo's from, if you don't mind me asking.
I've been dealing recently with Vantage who are just at the end of our road.
Heard you on VT by the way about 4ish today but didn't break in on the group. Will give you a shout when I am next on air, now I've found the handies and chargers...

Tyres.
Hot Lane. In the Mother Town.
Speak to Russell.
Don't mention my name. He will charge you more!
Been going there for 25+ years, tried other places, but always gone back.
Definately recommend Toyo Proxes CF1, but see what he says.
He does sell budget tyres, but he doesn't recommend.
And I agree.:woop:
Pay him a visit; you won't be disappointed.

I'm wondering if the tyre size (205/65 15H) on the Mk3 is just more expensive generally than the Mk2 tyres.
First impressions are the tyres are a lot quieter than the michelins. I've not taken them 'to the edge' in any way though, so can't really comment on the grip yet. We've got a trip over the A65 to Skipton coming up, so I should get a better feel then.
