Hi, this is the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) control valve. In theory when the engine is not under load, cold? the flap will close and allow exhaust gas to be recirculated into the inlet.

The flap is vacuum operated from a control solenoid and vacuum reservoir located near the battery.. it should normally be in the open position allowing "fresh" air into your engine...

As many do I believe the system is tosh and have disconnected mine on my van and blanked off the exhaust outlet.. Feel free to see how much black gunk is in your plastic manifold, all caused by this invention designed to reduce emissions!! Smile

Corij the thread linked by adam is a good one but you need to keep your wits about you as a lot of the replies relate to the chaps with the 2.0 engine. Basically you can do it with success by plugging the vac lines as suggested by Ron as then the exhaust fumes never enter the engine as the egr doesn't get the signal to open.
I've done my 1.9 and am pleased with it, I also did the same to my C15.
If you try and blank at the exhaust pipe the access is difficult and you may strip threads giving you major work.
Look here for how I blanked off my pipe.... 3rd page you'll see a photograph
