used 110 xtr or nearly new 90 xtr?
#1
Hello,

After a lot of research and some considerable soulsearching I've decided to go for a Berlingo 1.6 HDi XTR, however I'm undecided between these two options:

Option 1: 2010 110bhp xtr, ex-motability car with under 15,000 miles on the clock.
Option 2: nearly new (2012 or 2013) 90bhp xtr.

The reason I was initially drawn to the 110 model is that when I test drove a 90bhp VTR I found it a bit flat at low revs and hoped that a 110bhp car would pull better. However, on this thread, pch says that the 90bhp model is more suited to short journeys around town because the DPF on the 110 gets blocked more easily. I'm wondering why that is. Does the 90bhp model have a different particulate filter? I'll be doing short journeys for the most part (with some longer journeys thrown in to clear the filter) -- would I be better off opting for the 90bhp model? If so, would I be losing out on pulling power quite substantially?

The other worry I have re. Option 1 is that having done less than 15,000 miles over 3 years, the car will have been used mainly for short journeys. Is this kind of use likely to have seriously affected the DPF or the car engine?

Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.

If I remember correctly the difference between the 110 and 90 is 2 secs is it worth paying more to go 2 secs faster?

Hi Philip,

No, it's obviously not worth that, but I was just wondering whether the 110bhp model has better pulling power at low revs (where the 90bhp model is a bit flat).

The real dealbreaker for me, though, will be the particulate filter issue. As I will be doing a lot of short journeys, I really need to know whether the 90bhp model offers any real advantage compared to the 110...

Ive been using the 90 for almost 3 years now for taxi use and never found it a problem for being under powered even with 4 adults and loaded with luggage going to the airport it still pulls good.

I dont know any taxi drivers that use the 110 mainly because of the FAP filter problems with short journeys.

That's really helpful to know, Philip, thanks.

Interesting! So is the 90 model fitted with a different filter from the 110 model? Where can I find out more on this?

Scavenging the forums on the matter I found this thread from 2011 where it is quoted that Citroen in their advertising material for the Mk3 Berlingo implied that only the 110bhp model had the particulate filter (see Northman's post). In a thread on another forum, however, it is stated that from 1/1/2011 all vehicles had to have DPFs fitted. If that's correct, all Berlingos registered after that date would effectively have the particulate filter whether 90bhp or 110 (115 from 2012) bhp. Before 2011, however, it is possible that 90bhp Berlingos did not have DPFs fitted.

All this borders on speculation, though -- could someone confirm that prior to 2011 90bhp Berlingos DID NOT have DPF filters fitted?

Early 75 & 90bhp mk3s did not have dpf, 110 always did. All diesel Berlingos now have dpf. So if its a 2012 90bhp then both cars you are considering have dpf so this does not need to be a consideration when choosing between cars. Provided you do a monthly trip of a few miles down a dual carriageway at 50mph or more you won't have any probs. Most important is service history, one would hope that both cars have been serviced by Citroen garage because correct grade of oil used in these engines is essential

Thanks, Opensauce, that really clarifies things. Would you happen to know when DPFs started getting fitted on 90bhp mk3s by any chance? Would models from 2010 have them?

Euro 5 emission standards came into force in Sept 2010 so it is possible 90bhp cars then had to be fitted with dpf. At some point the Co2 emissions on 90bhp Mk3 were reduced from 150 to 135 So I would guess it is the cars with the lower emisson that have dpf. If this is the case then non dpf car would be £140pa road tax & dpf car £125. I stand to be corrected though if anybody knows different.
