speedo drive unit

Hi i removed the gearbox to replace the clutch noticed the speedo drive unit is loose inside the gearbox is this normal,also noticed 10 small ballbearings lying on the floor ,can anybody help,thanks im a newmember:

No, the drive is NOT supposed to be loose.

Lets hope there wasn't 11 or 12 of those balls in the bearing...
(I have no idea how many there are supposed to be. If one is loose inside, the entire gearbox is in danger of being ruined if you try to use it)

EDIT:
The Gearbox is a very delicate piece of Hardware. It's NOT something that every Tom, d**k and Harry can open up and repair. You may need to pass this task onto a specialized garage/workshop.
I have some experience(dumped the innards from a Renault 18 Gearbox with broken mounts into the shell of one that had been run without oil. My brother is a clutz... ) and no... I wouldn't touch a modern gearbox designed for a transverse mount, like the one in the Berlingo.
