Which gear linkage?
#1
The gearbox on my 1.4 (petrol) works fine although there is a lot of play from left to right (front to rear movement is fine) on the lever itself .

Having been reading the forum posts I now know that I need to replace worn linkage parts to fix this. But before I go messing with anything is there a specific part responsible for left-right movement?

Or is it a case that I need to have a mate move the lever about while I look underneath to see which bit's humped?

I believe it's easier to reach the links if you remove the air filter and reach down into the engine room.
Why not do that and just feel if any are loose?
There's 3 links connected to the gearbox; 1 long and 2 short ones.
One's there to hold the 'knee' in position relative to the gearbox, and the other two handles the forward/back and left/right movements respectively.

On mine, the rubber holding the 'cups' part of the balljoints into place in the linkages had just rotted away. So when I tried to pull off the short links, the 'cups' staid behind...

New links aren't all that expensive on the Bay of E, and wouldn't you believe it they're even adjustable.

That's great thanks. I had a reach down the back of the engine (real easy with the little 1.4 motor) and could feel that the large ball joint at the end of the longest rod (No.1 in the diagram below) is as loose as holy hell.

I take it I have to replace the whole No.1 rod (and any of the small rods that die during disassembly) ? or do I need to replace no.5 as well?

On a side note, they seem a bit tricky to find, is there a particular name for that part? I'm looking on ebay.uk under "gear linkage berlingo" and it's not showing much.

Actually, the joint between 1 and 5 IS supposed to be somewhat loose...
But if it's too loose, it's part 5 you need.

(This may or may not the one for your car.)

It's more critical if the links numbered 2 and 3 are loose.

Its not link number 1 that needs replacing that will be loose and able to move freely as its connected to the gear stick. You need to replace number 2 and the 2 number 3's. Nice and easy to do, i got mine up on a pair of ramps, long flat head screwdriver and a whack with a hammer, they'll pop of easy as the rubber will be perished. Just pop the new ones on, they click on easily by hand.

Forgot to add, type 'berlingo gear linkage' on ebay and it brings 18 items up for sale. I think there all the same for the various engines, not sure about the age of the vehicles though.

Thanks for the replies, i've had another look today and 2 & 3 seem fine, able to move but no play/slop in the joints.

Just the ball joint between 1 and 5 seems far more loose than you'd expect from a healthy ball joint, the ball able to rattle around in the cup. If you move the gear lever left to right you can see it has to take up the slack in this joint before moving the small rods.

Which is a bugger, i'd much rather just replace 2 and 3!

Thanks for the ebay link, i'd not found that in my own search results.
