1.9D fuel consumption?

I have looking at an 2004 berlingo van it's the 1.9d version.
But i have heard they are not very good on fuel on long motorway journeys but ok on short around town type driving..
Could someone please tell me is this true?
I would prefer the HDI engine but out of my price range as i already own a car..

I've had 3 1.9diesels & all not great on mpg on the motorway as your pretty much flat out at 75. I've now got the 2.0 hdi & sits at 80 feathering the throttle & doing much better mpg. I would look for a hdi they do come up cheap if you wait

I made an excel chart for the MPG of my 1.9d. From Jan this year it has averaged 36.86 mpg and costs in fuel 18p per mile.:thumbsup:

At one time I was getting about 52 mpg until I realised that I had boobed with my chart and was only adding miles and no fuel. illyme:
