[Engine] I ran out of Diesel....
#1
Sad
Today I stupidly ran out of dieselConfusedillyme:

I put some diesel in the tank and tried to start it, forgetting that it was a Diesel and not a Petrol, so I got out and gave the rubber ball-thing a few squeezes and then tried again.
After a couple of attempts where it started but died after a few seconds it finally started up and seems to be running ok now.

However...

- Engine check light is on (cause by low fuel pressure in the fuel rail?) this should go out of it's own accord eventually??

- Every so often, usually when engine is idling at standstill it sounds as if the "top-end" of the engine is quite noisy, more so than usual.
Will this sort itself out? or do I need to bleed the system or something??

I think there may be air trapped in the fuel system.
When I press the "bulb" to prime it I can see a big ir bubble make it's way down the clear fuel line.

How can I bleed the air from the system?

If it will start and does not cut out then take it for a few mile drive.

if it keeps cutting out I would remove the fuel filter and fill it with fresh diesel then start it and take it for a run as above.

Thumbs Up
Phew! been out for a drive and after a bit of kangarooing at the start it was fine, and now starts up just fine:thumbsup:

I still have the engine chack light lit up on the dash though, I assume this is just from the previous low fuel pressure, and the light may go out of it's own accord in time??

no you will need to get it re-set!

most small garages can do a simple reset for you.

Where is this "bulb" located (assuming that 1.6 HDI is under the bonnet :-)
So far there was no need to use it, but now my son started to use the car, and he is a student, so you can imagine it may come handy to know where the "bulb" is Confusedillyme:

On my 2003 2.0Hdi the Diesel hand primer "bulb" is located right next to the far left hand injector, quite easy to spot, but quite awkward to squeeze it to prime!

It looks a little bit like this one...

Asd for if/where it is on the 1.6, I couldn't tell you for certain.

Incidentally, the engine check/warning light has now gone out of its own accord, and the car is running sweetly.... more French weirdness!

If I remember right on the 1.6hdi pull off the cover with 1.6hdi on and the priming bulb is straight in front of you.
Are we there yet????? Huh
Ex 1.6hdi van now 3 seater 1.4 multispace

Dont bother taking it to a garage to reset, take the battery leads off and attach them together for 15 mins, et voila, reset done.
