fans not working
#1
so my fans dont come on when they should, gauge goes to half and as long as the car is moving its fine, but if i stop for say 5 minutes then it moves to the red, its takes about 1-2 sec for it to move to the red from the middle its like there is no in between the 1/2 and red, if i power the fan directly it does work so something is stopping it when wired normally, ive checked the fuses (not the relay's as i dont know which 1's to check).

its a mk1 1.4

Hi John,
Had exactly the same problem with our 02 1.4. We have aircon. I assume the thermostat is ok and the system bled?
If you take the connector off the temp sensor by the thermostat and turn the ign on the fans should work.
Because the fans worked I thought, like yourself, that all was ok, however, when the car was put on the proper Citroen diagnostics it showed a fault with the "High speed fan curcuit". So it appears that the fans are designed to run at 2 speeds. The mechanic fixed the fault which, was a problem with the wiring, but unfortunately I didn't get the chance to speak to him to see exactly what he did.

Does it actually boil the coolant?.

The switch that controlled the fans on my mk1 02 1.4 petrol didn't work until the temp was about 110/120 c. The switch was hidden under the thermostat housing and was wired to the temp gauge sensor which was on the thermostat housing.
It had a dodgy connector.

hi guys, i changed the thermostat and bled the system, i dont know if the coolant actually boils as when it says hot and STOP - i stop the engine, it was also in for its mot but the guy had to abort the test as the same happened.

So if i disconnect the plug from under the thermostat should the fans come on?

The sensor under the thermostat when overheating provides an earth for the fans. If you disconnect it and earth the wire then the fan should start.

ok i was messing with the car and thought i'd remove the sensor and have look at it.

now to me that looks brand new, as i have a pin leak in the rad i drained the coolant, removed the thermostat housing (the big metal part on the side of the head), when i did that naturally some coolant came out but none came out when i removed the sensor - it was dry and looks like its never seen any water in its life.

It is not exposed to coolant. It sits in a recess that's bored into the head.

That appearance is totally normal.
