[Engine] engine whine
#1
Hi

Thanks for taking time to read this.

I have just bought a berlingo van 1.6hdi 56 plate, delighted with the van but wanted to check something.

It sounds like the engine has a whine. not a thrust bearing noise as it doesn't go away when the clutch is depressed.

Doesn't seem excessive but wanted to check common faults.

The van has 92k and doesn't affect the driving.

Help will be much appreciated.

ThanksSmile

Typically a whine is a drive belt over tight, either the alternator belt or timing belt.

Thanks for your reply. the timing belt needs changed at 100k I believe so will get that done Monday and have the alt belt examined at the same time.

Have heard that the top pulley can make a whine?????

Replace both belts whilst they are already off the vehicle and replace the water pump as a matter of course !
Cannot help regarding the pulley as I am a 1.9D man.

My 1.6hdi had a whining noise that got progressively worse, turned out to be the auxiliary drive belt.

Faulty fan belt tensioner caused whine on mine.

Will get tensioner, belt and pulley changed. Any other areas I should attend to before they bite. :p

Take a long cardboard tube out of the wifes tin foil or cling film...., and with the engine running, put one end to your ear and roam the engine bay with the other end to track down the source, paying particular attention to the front of the engine. you can also place a solid bar like a long screwdriver on top of items like the alternator....vacuum pump.....fan housing etc, then press the other end to your ear to help track down the source.
