My 57 plate 1.6hdi 75 runs rough when cold but always starts first time, also noticed a little white smoke whilst running rough. After a couple of minutes it seems to run perfectly. Not checked for any fault codes as i dont have a code reader but looking to buy one if anybody has any recommendation.

It could be blocked/faulty injectors? My first port of call would be a leak off test to see if that turns anything up.

Hi Steve,
As you know, I have same year and engine.
Mine starts no problem from cold but "hunts" for about 15-20 seconds.
(Used to get "hunting" on old carbs on petrol engines; revs go up and down especially when cold.)
When first started revs go +/- 50 or 100 each side of tickover.
Been wondering what causes it, but doesn't last long enough to worry about. Runs fine after that, not miss a beat.
You got me thinking.... should I be worried?
Anyone any thoughts?

is there a heaterplug set up on the HDI motors? If so, it sounds like there's a plug down getting inadequate heat into the combustion chamber causing improper combustion which the computer senses and tries to dial out by messing with the RPM

Can't say if there is any smoke.
Usually sitting up front at the time.
Sorry...
Nothing seen in mirrors, so if there is must be very little.

Its only a very small amount of smoke for a few seconds, and yeah i've had the plugs out all about 1 ohm and appear to glow the same at the tip. I will investigate further but dont have much time at the moment so it may be a while.
Thanks for the suggestions so far, will report back any findings.
