engine noise 1.9d berlingo

right , i was parked at some traffic lights , and my engine suddenly changed its tune , it sounded like an old tractor or something .


i immediatly though it was a ring gone or piston maybe something serious at least , so pulled over asap .

i had a look over engine and could not see anything obvious or out of the ordinary (not that you would lol) so i tried to start again it fired up fine and has run normal since .

it was like it just dropped a cylinder for a while .

im going abroad in this , in november so obviously id like to get to bottom of it , anyone any ideas ?

ive just changed air , fuel & oil filters and fresh oil .

Perhaps a little air in the fuel system - if you've literally just changed the filter.

This happened to mine about 2 years ago , i was driving down a slip road off the motorway . I killed the engine as i got to the roundabout as the noise was so bad . When i restarted it was back to normal !! Just didnt make sense !! Someone sugested a sticking injector so i got some injector cleaner the same day and emptied the lot into a full tank . Its never happened since and i'm not sure what the cause was ..Very wierd !! Oh mines also a 1.9 DW8 , 2001 .

Happened on my 1st 1.9D I was informed that it was the cold start solenoid kicking in for no reason (provides extra fuel so the extra noise and excess diesel knock) shut it down and restarted all OK. Note after another constant problem. A hesitation when travelling at a constant 30/40 in 4/5 gear when trying to gently accelerate IE in a stream of traffic (If it was petrol you would say it was misfiring) the main stealer could not read the ECU (all locked up) so it was replaced under warrantee and the problems disappeared.
