Engine stalls
#1
Hi Guys,
I have a 2003 1.9d LX van. I ran out of diesel a while back. Anyway I managed to get it started again by priming the pump/filter etc. But since then, when the fuel level gets down to a 1/4 tank, the engine starts to run intermittent, losing power, speeding up etc, until eventually the engine stalls. I then have to pump it up to get it going again. If I stall on an upward slope, the engine wont start at all and the only way to get it going again is to obviously fill the tank up with diesel. I have accepted that when it gets down to 1/4 tank level I have refilled with fuel, but every now and then I get caught out as sometimes it happens just before 1/4 tank level. Any help would be grateful.

Have you done a filter change? Its quite common on the kit I work on. You'll find when the tank is full there is a lot of 'weight' effectively assisting in pushing the fuel through. If you have a partially blocked fuel line or filter this is when it will show when the head of pressure drops! Be careful if you are running out frequently you will kill the injection pump in no time. I'll look into the system in a bit more detail later.
