[Engine] Fuel System fault - fuel filter
#1
We have four new 2012 Berlingo Vans 1.6 HDi. Two of them have been towed to the garage this month after the engine management light came on and the engine was in limp mode. The garage said this was a blocked fuel filter due to dirty fuel and drained all the fuel out and fitted a new filter.. However, both are new less that 20k miles, filled up at different service stations. On the second van we asked for the filter back, we took the fuel filter apart and found it was not a forced fuel filter but a full flow filter - ie the fuel washes past the filter not through it so it cannot block. Is this a problem any other members have had - we feel there must be another problem.

Well, these codes all point to low fuel pressure. If the fuel filter is bypassed as you said above then I'd suspect the rail fuel pump. Was the output pressure checked?

Hello, thank you, the fuel filter was still in position - however the point I made about the fuel filter is that it has a hole for the inlet and an outlet and the fuel can simply pass through it without needing to go through the filter very poor design. That aside I am concerned that I have two vans with the same fault which seems odd to me, has anyone else had this problem ?

Hello, the point I was making is that the problem might lie past the filter (see fault code reasons). The filter is not on the common rail high pressure side. The high pressure pump could be at fault. With today's production schedules it is possible a batch of defective pumps got through.

My 2007 1.6 hdi is putting up the same codes, plus P1351 which is a glow plug code. So I was wondering if there was any further developments on this??

Well yes ... The problem was solved by draining all the fuel and renewing the filter. however when the filter was taken apart and checked I found it did not have the capability of filtering the fuel due to poor design there was a hole straight through the centre of it !
I challenged Citroen and they refunded the cost of the filters and the labour.
So something is wrong in the fuel system somewhere and they did not quible about a refund

hi there. so what filter do you have in them now? can you also describe the hole through the centre as every berlingo filter i have seen has a hole through center, top to bottom.
as far as i could see in mine, when i looked at it this morning, fuel goes through the middle and out through the walls of the filter?

what filters do you have now?

p.s. congrats on getting money back from a dealer! in my experience they keep changing parts until problem fixed and whe it goes wrong a few days later, they don't give you anything except offering to change even more parts!

thanks.

I guess your vans have the metal canister fuel filters, cannot comment on the fuels ability to bypass, as I never looked that hard.
Our your staff feeling the vans with iffy fuel (just a thought ). These filters are due replacement on 2nd service as far as I know , but 20k is a little early for blockage.
