Vehicle Financing

I always come back to you knowledgeable folk when I've a question, so here goes:

I know when you are buying a vehicle from a dealer they always have the offer of financing, if required and that there is a variety of firms doing such financing...

However I was wondering in the case of a private sale do these companies also offer financing directly to me as an individual as opposed to me going to the usual suspects (banks, building societies, etc, etc...) to get the cash for a purchase privately??

The main reason for asking is that the financing offered by dealers at the minute seem to be a whole lot cheaper than anything I can get from the usual suspects...

If so what firms do you guys have experience of and how do you distinguish decent firms from the range of Sub-Prime lenders out there, you know the type who will give you money no matter who you are at seriously high interest rates...
