Hi I am planning to change my vehicle in the next 6 months I have my sights on either a Doblo, Teepee or Berlingo, which is top of my list. All the Berlingo owners I have spoken with seem to love their motor with a passion. From the vehicle spec it will meet my needs of:
Carrying 4 bikes on a tow bar mount.
3 passengers;
light camping (although with 3 generations of females on board I usually carry more supplies than Rommel took across Libya).

The usual car reviews reccommend a diesel, but in the last 6 years I have only done 28k miles and am being put off by tales of DPF failures.. I am not too fussed about economy and can afford any of the range + extras.

So what spec and whether diesel or petrol?

Well not all of the diesels have a dpf, ie the 90 bhp version Berlingo, personally I would go for the diesel, as it drives so much better than the petrol in the way it delivers the power, and smoothness. Just make sure you change the oil more frequently than the manufacturers recommend, and you will have no problems.

many thanks for the info. But what about my low mileage and short trips (28k over 6 years) will this have any effect on a diesel performance?

I'd go with petrol at that sort of mileage use, diesels gum up if not used on regular motorway trips. I've had 45mpg out of my 2006 1.6 petrol over a 400 mile trip. Drive it like you stole it and it'll cost you at the pumps.

Hi & welcome.Although my HDi is a mk2,it's only doing 6,000 a year.
I keep the short trips to the minimum & every long trip I work it hard for a few miles once it's really warm.I also use Millers additive.
MOT'd last week & emissions read 0.6.I prefer the diesel driving style to petrol but that's a matter of taste.:thumbsup:alut:

Beware that earlier mk3 Berlingos '08-'11 had only a 55kg towbar load limit. 4 bikes on a rack might exceed this. 2011 on has different chassis & towbar load limit is 70kg. If you are buying '11 on Berlingo all diesels have dpf. It depends what you mean by short runs. 6 miles at 60mph along a dual carriageway once a month should be enough to regenerate dpf.

Thank you for the info. Short runs for me is local 30mph at 5 miles a trip with no heavy load.

Take a bit of time in looking at the towball bike racks available. The first one I got was for two bikes, and the handlebars of the innermost bike touched the rear screen from time to time. I queried this with the seller and after some investigation it seems that this is likely to be because of the angle of the towball. I changed the rack for a 3-bike model but don't use the innermost mounting, which solved the problem.
I used http://www.roofbox.co.uk/ . They have an excellent choice of makes, models and accessories, including used racks and returns, and are very easy to deal with. They also offer a 90-day refund scheme.
