Heater control panel bulb replace
#1
Hi all. Searched but can find no thread on this. Anyway, '09 Mk3, right hand bulb behind dashboard heater control knob, goes out, whack it & its back on again. So at some point I will need to replace it. Is this easy diy, how is it done & what type of bulb? Cheers. Big Grin

Cheers, yes mines out of warranty of course, not really a major problem though but I don't want to start pulling things around until I know what to do in case something breaks.

Just had a bit of an explore, the storage thingy above heater controls pulls out easy, there is a spike on the back of it that pushes into a hole. A feel behind heater panel suggests bulbs might be the type that come with a plastic holder & remove/refit by rotating half a turn. I guess these would be main dealer supplied & expensive for what they are. It might be possible to change them without further dismantling if you have smallish fingers. Otherwise the half inch high plastic panel below controls would have to be levered out to expose screws as per German instructions & one would have hope it didn't break.

Light is working again ok at moment. If it goes again I will get a replacement bulb & have a go at it & report back.

Job done for anybody interested.....I found a rear view of heater panel from an ebay ad.

The brown bits are the bulb holders, standard items that take capless 286 bulbs. Pull out cubby hole above panel by inserting both hands & pushing down & back. Using a 10mm hex socket with a blob of blutack in to stop holder dropping out I was able to to remove holders, replace bulbs & replace holders with the aid of a small inspection mirror.

I'm having a nightmare trying to do this!
I've got access sorted but getting the damn things out is taking layers of skin off my hands....
Do they just twist out anti clock wise?

Or of course I could bump the whole thread. Sorry I did not answer question Pete, I was on me hols. Yes they do twist out anticlockwise.

Hope this helps you Jonathon.

Woo! Just completed this procedure and feeling unreasonably pleased with myself for doing so.
As above, it was a case of pulling the top storage section out, then just fiddling about to get the plastic bulb holder out. I fumbled away for ages before digging the inspection mirror out - once I could see what I was doing it took about 30 seconds. 99p for a bulb from main dealer and job's a good 'un. Hooray for forums!
