As a mechanic, I always steer well clear of purchasing cars trucks vans or motorbikes that show sign of....or have owners declaring..." its just had the head gasket done recently mate"!!!....this tells me straight away that the engine has more than likely been overheated as this is usually the symptom that has grabbed the drivers attention to the head gasket failure in the first place, a failed head gasket can cause an overheating engine, on the other hand a overheating engine can cause the head gasket to fail, and once the engine has been overheated it has been damaged to a unknown extent and often as far as complete destruction, the owner, realising this, then has the gasket replaced, and swiftly sells the car on, the new owner then runs into continuous problems with the engine....loss of power....strange noises.....poor starting...water in the oil...oil in the water...and snapping timing belts due to a partially seized overhead camshaft which is usually the first mojor victim on a modern overheated engine. To initially assess the limit of damage, take the car to a garage and have the water system pressure tested, the mechanic will listen for the noise you have, and will fit a pump to the header tank and increase the cooling system pressure to a certain limit as recommended by the manufacturer, this will show up any weaknesses such as internal cracks. Good luck .

Could be just the oil cooler that's kaput.
