Old oil removal

I've read on the German Berlingo forum that the preferred method to remove the old oil prior to changing filter and filling with new oil is to use an oil pump with a tube inserted thru the dip stick hole. The claim was that the drain plug is not at the bottom of the oil sump and about 0.6 l of old oil will remain in the sump. Any thoughts or recommendations on this method? I've always used the drain plug on previous motors but my Berlingo is too low to the ground to get under it conveniently so the pump out method looked interesting.

Why pump? May be to put something under a corresponding wheel before changing oil to tilt a body?

I haven't heard the pump method myself either before. Maybe try, as pk said, try jacking the van on one side. It would be interesting to find out from the dealer if this 0.6L left is actually true.

I just servced mine i'd say that the remains of oil in the sump would be more like 0.1 L . Dont think that the pumping method
is much better . If you are going to tilt the car i'd recommend
to lift the front of the car higher than
the rear . dont think it will matter much.

Isn't the oil drain plug at the lowest point on the sump anyway?

I have a set of ramps, drive the van up and there's oodles of room underneath, not good if you're only 5 foot 5 though, you won't be able to see under the bonnet!!

No . It is plased on the bottom of the sump but they have raised it 3-4 mm so that the lowest part of the drain plug i level with the bottom of the sump. However the bottom area is not very big and if you take away the slightly higer area around the drain plug it is not room for much old oil ther .

I don't like the pump method myself. It's only done to save 2 mins it takes to open the sump plug. And iv never seen a sump hold any large amount of oil.

Also how do ya know the pump has taken all the oil or and shite that might be in the sump.
