Rumbling
#1
Hi All.
Thanks to all who replied to my first thread re.twang at rear.
I have another noise for you now. A rumbling sound from the o/s front. It happens when going over bumps in the road. I initially thought it was a wheel bearing. However no play in the wheel when off the ground and it spins ok.
It's a hollow rumble, and seems to be getting worse.
Any ideas ?

Drop link? Doesn't give a rumble noise though, but cheap to replace if not done recently. Gives more of a clunk over bumps. have you checked for a broken spring?Sad

Ive had broken springs before. They are a weakness with these.

I had a similar noise on my van, loose wheel nuts after having new front tyres fitted.
When I checked it I had the wheel off the floor and found nothing at all, no wheel bearing, no loose wheel and no drive shaft issue. I was a little surprised as usually I find something.
So it was back to basics and check the simplest of things first - first being the check of someone else's work and that of the tyre fitter - I found the wheel nuts were loose. Tightening these by half a quarter turn each removed the noise completely.
It may not be so in your case but it is a valuable lesson to be aware of.

Sounds very much like a wheel bearing starting to fail. There may be no play at the minute but all the grease may have been washed out so its starting to rumble.
Just a thought.
Are we there yet????? Huh

Make sure you check the bottom ball joint. Mine was "knocking" when it went over bumps. Can you feel any roughness when you spin the wheel? Compare it with the other wheel.

Hmmm problem is they are best replaced in pairs as the other side often goes when you replace just the one!

I have replaced mine several times.

Usually causes a clunk over bumps rather than a rumble, so that's unusual.
